Elle a compl\u00e9t\u00e9 un Ph.D. en architecture \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Cambridge, innovant sur l\u2019int\u00e9gration des aspects qualitatifs et quantitatifs de la lumi\u00e8re en architecture. Co-fondatrice du Groupe de recherche en ambiances physiques, elle s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la biophilie architecturale et la satisfaction environnementale des occupants, associant l\u2019importance du design au comportement des usagers. Elle est experte en mod\u00e9lisation analogique et digitale de la lumi\u00e8re, d\u00e9veloppant et appliquant son expertise au design innovant de nouveaux b\u00e2timents. Elle a produit des travaux de recherche fondamentale et appliqu\u00e9e li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9gration de strat\u00e9gies bioclimatiques \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle urbaine, architecturale et du d\u00e9tail pour plusieurs projets ayant re\u00e7u des prix d\u2019excellence pour l\u2019innovation architecturale: OAQ, m\u00e9daille de l\u2019IRAC, prix Energia, prix CECObois, Bomex.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Claude Demers is a Professor of architecture at Laval University, actively involved in teaching and research on daylighting through funded projects since 1997. She has completed a PhD in architecture at the University of Cambridge, innovating on the integration of qualitative and quantitative assessments of daylighting in architecture. Co-founder of the Groupe de Recherche en Ambiances Physiques, she is interested in biophilic architecture and occupant\u2019s satisfaction, associating the importance of design to user\u2019s behaviour. She is an expert in the digital and analogical modeling of light, developing and applying her research expertise to innovate on new building designs. The simplicity of the approach facilitates its integration into the architectural design process by using available technologies. The methodology concentrates on the early design stage since it expresses the architect&#8217;s intention of a particular atmosphere that will govern further developments of the project. It takes into account the increasing interest in the utilisation of photography as an important part of the design process, and adds a quantifiable aspect to light as it offers the possibility to integrate numerical values when required. The visual representation of light as a pattern, instead of numerical values, facilitates the quantitative assessment and relates to existing techniques of lighting analysis, such as the isolux contours. The research emphasises and develops the possibilities offered by a partially computerised approach using calculation method and physical modelling. It combines the use of physical models, video camera, and computerised image analysis as main tools for the evaluation of light. The resulting data collection and visualisation of the lighting effects constitute a bank of images for the generation of space from lights. The combination of images creates spaces issued from the nature of light, allowing new ideas in the development of the initial design stages. The research defines the potential and limitations of the use of images in the composition of space according to the physical properties of light. The lighting pattern also constitutes the basis for a classification of lights which relates to the design method using images. It proposes a link between quantitative and qualitative aspects of light stemming from spatial components and apertures. Elle permet de d\u00e9finir visuellement des \u00e9chelles de contraste associ\u00e9es \u00e0 des morphologies d&#8217;ouvertures. La lumi\u00e8re \u00e9tudi\u00e9e est essentiellement plastique, non attribuable \u00e0 une fonction sp\u00e9cifique d&#8217;un espace. La m\u00e9thode utilise les outils de conception de l&#8217;architecte tels dessins, maquettes et photos, facilitant son int\u00e9gration \u00e0 la pratique architecturale. La photographie r\u00e9pond non seulement \u00e0 sa fonction traditionnelle d&#8217;illustrer qualitativement un concept mais devient aussi le support de l&#8217;analyse quantitative du contraste. L&#8217;ordinateur et le logiciel de traitement d&#8217;images Adobe Photoshop facilitent l&#8217;analyse comparative des r\u00e9sultats photographiques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Caract\u00e8re de la recherche<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>La d\u00e9marche est exp\u00e9rimentale et porte sur l&#8217;analyse qualitative et quantitative de la lumi\u00e8re sur l&#8217;effet du contraste. La m\u00e9thode s&#8217;int\u00e8gre \u00e0 la d\u00e9marche cr\u00e9atrice de l&#8217;architecte o\u00f9 la lumi\u00e8re devient un crit\u00e8re important de production. Elle est qualitative dans la mesure o\u00f9 elle qualifie les ambiances lumineuses. Son approche qualitative lui conf\u00e8re un caract\u00e8re propre \u00e0 l&#8217;approche cr\u00e9ative du concepteur-architecte. Elle apporte des r\u00e9ponses quantitatives \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes esth\u00e9tiques de design et constitue un apport \u00e0 la m\u00e9thodologie de design en recherche architecturale.<\/p>\n<p><b>caract\u00e8re appliqu\u00e9 de la recherche<br \/>\n<\/b>La recherche propose de sch\u00e9matiser et de circonscrire visuellement des r\u00e9sultats exp\u00e9rimentaux en vue de cr\u00e9er un outil m\u00e9thodologique adapt\u00e9 au langage architectural de la lumi\u00e8re. Elle fonde ses bases sur les outils traditionnels de conception de l&#8217;espace soient: maquettes, dessins, photos. L&#8217;ordinateur et le num\u00e9riseur, outil contemporain du cr\u00e9ateur sont utilis\u00e9s pour fins d&#8217;analyse quantitative des r\u00e9sultats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Conclusions <\/b>La recherche d\u00e9montre que les modifications importantes dans la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie d&#8217;une ouverture n&#8217;entra\u00eenent pas n\u00e9cessairement une modification importante du contraste et du pattern lumineux. Par contre, de subtiles modifications au design d&#8217;une ouverture peuvent dans certains cas modifier consid\u00e9rablement l&#8217;ambiance g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e dans l&#8217;espace et m\u00eame transformer un mur plan en une courbe. La morphologie de l&#8217;espace est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement d\u00e9termin\u00e9e par la distribution de lumi\u00e8re. La lumi\u00e8re et l&#8217;ombre ne d\u00e9finissent pas toujours la forme r\u00e9elle des espaces, mais pour un contraste donn\u00e9 jouent un r\u00f4le majeur dans l&#8217;interpr\u00e9tation du lieu et des ambiances. L&#8217;ouverture a donc une incidence majeure sur la conception architecturale. Ces consid\u00e9rations sont pr\u00e9cieuses dans la cr\u00e9ation de l&#8217;espace architectural et doivent \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9es d\u00e8s l&#8217;esquisse pour conf\u00e9rer l&#8217;ambiance d\u00e9sir\u00e9e dans un projet. Cette ambiance peut \u00eatre associ\u00e9e au contraste relev\u00e9 sur un plan vertical.
